The ACGcert™ Signature Grading Scale: Your Guide to Signature Quality

The ACGcert™ Signature Grading Scale provides collectors with a trusted, transparent framework for evaluating the overall quality, presentation and desirability of an autograph. While authenticity confirms who signed an item, grading assesses how well it was signed, helping collectors better understand the signature's visual appeal and potential market value.

Authenticity vs Signature Quality

A common misconception within the hobby is that a lower signature grade indicates a weaker authentication opinion. This is not the case.

A signature can be 100% authentic whilst receiving a lower grade due to the circumstances in which it was obtained.

At ACGcert™, our team has decades of hands-on experience authenticating both controlled private signing signatures and genuine in-person “Street Signed” autographs obtained at film premieres, hotels, airports, sporting venues, training grounds and other public appearances.

Unlike many authentication companies that primarily assess convention and private signing examples, ACGcert™ is highly experienced in the unique characteristics of authentic public signing signatures. These signatures are often produced in fast-moving, crowded environments where celebrities, athletes and musicians may be signing for dozens of collectors within seconds.

As a result, genuine street signatures are frequently shorter, more rushed, less consistent and may display reduced pen control when compared to signatures obtained during relaxed private signing sessions. This is completely normal and is taken into account during both the authentication and grading process.

Our grading system measures the quality of the signature—not the authenticity of the autograph.

Factors Influencing Signature Grades

Several factors contribute to the final signature grade, including:

  • Signature completeness
  • Overall penmanship and formation
  • Flow and consistency
  • Pen quality and ink coverage
  • Signature placement on the item
  • Smudging or skipping
  • Visual presentation
  • The signing environment

A signature obtained in a controlled private signing will generally achieve a higher grade than an equally authentic signature obtained in a fast-paced public environment, simply because the signer has more time and better conditions to produce a cleaner autograph.

  • ACG 10
A flawless signature that is exceptionally bold, perfectly formed and ideally positioned. Signed with excellent pen quality and displaying complete confidence throughout. The benchmark for premium autograph quality.
  • ACG 9
An outstanding signature with only the slightest minor imperfection. Strong, bold, well-balanced and highly desirable with excellent placement.
  • ACG 8
A very attractive signature that is clear, well-formed and confidently executed. Minor imperfections may be present but overall presentation remains excellent.
  • ACG 7
A strong, easily recognisable signature showing light signs of haste or minor imperfections. A quality example that offers excellent collector value.
  • ACG 6
A genuine signature displaying more noticeable rushed characteristics, lighter pen pressure or less favourable placement. This grade is commonly seen on authentic public or “Street Signed” autographs where speed naturally affects presentation.
  • ACG 5
An authentic signature with obvious signs of haste. It may be a shortened variation of the signer's known autograph, feature inconsistent pen flow or be positioned less favourably on the item. Despite the lower grade, it remains a genuine example and is typical of many authentic street-signed signatures.
  • ACG 4
A heavily rushed but authentic signature with reduced legibility, poor pen control, weak placement or lower quality ink performance. Commonly encountered in demanding public signing environments.
  • ACG 3
A difficult-to-read authentic signature with substantial aesthetic flaws. Although genuine, its visual appeal is significantly reduced and collectors may seek a stronger example.
  • ACG 2
An authentic signature displaying major quality issues that severely affect its presentation. While genuine, it falls well below the expected standard sought by most collectors.
  • ACG 1
Authentic but extremely poor in execution. The signature lacks strong identifiable structure, displays significant aesthetic flaws and would generally be considered well below average within the collector market.

ACGcert™ Authentication

By understanding the distinction between authentication and signature grading, collectors can make informed purchasing decisions with complete confidence.

At ACGcert™, we are equally comfortable and confident authenticating both beautifully executed private signing autographs and the often hurried, ever-changing signatures produced during genuine public "Street Signed" signing sessions.

Our grading system reflects the quality of the signature itself while recognising the real-world conditions under which many authentic autographs are obtained.
